A guide to help you figure out what size of window blinds work best for your windows.
The “window blind size chart” is a guide that will help you find the standard sizes for window blinds. It also has tips and tricks on how to measure your windows.
Knowing the usual sizes of window blinds should be your first step when shopping for beautiful window coverings. One erroneous measurement might be fatal and lead to the end of your life!
OK, it’s not quite that dramatic, but purchasing the incorrect blinds can upset you and cost you money in the long run since you’ll have to rectify your errors. The option is to leave the misshaped blinds up and let them partially obscure your lovely windows. It’s not a nice sight, believe me.
Here’s a handy advice on how to figure out the proper proportions, as well as which sizes are the most frequent nowadays, to guarantee you don’t buy the wrong blinds or the wrong sizes.
Is There a Standard Window Blinds Size?
If you go to any DIY shop or home improvement center, you’ll see that each style of blind is available in a variety of sizes, allowing you to select the right fit. Which, however, are the most common? It all depends on the windows, of course.
When researching common window sizes, you are likely to come across a few different options. There are no set proportions since it all relies on the window’s form. As a result, window blinds may be custom-made for specific windows or store-bought and cut to suit oddly shaped ones.
I don’t want to leave you in the dark, however. The three kinds of windows you’re likely to have in your house have the following measurements. Window blinds in normal sizes should fit these and may be obtained at most stores:
- 1–8 feet height, 2–8 feet wide picture windows
- 36–72 inch high, 24–48 inch wide double-hung windows
- Sliders range in height from 24 to 60 inches and width from 36 to 84 inches.
How to Get the Right Blinds by Measuring the Window
Mount from the inside
The Mount from the inside is the most common way of installing blinds, as it offers you a streamlined look without darkening the room completely. Since the blinds will go from one end to another but won’t encompass the outermost parts of the windows, there could be a stream of light on either side. In essence, you will get enough shade but won’t feel as if you’ve closed off the windows completely.
When measuring for the Mount from the inside, it all comes down to precision. Additionally, you have to take multiple measurements to ensure it is actually an option. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide:
- First, determine the window’s depth. To determine the depth of the window frame, use a metal tape measure. If it’s less than two inches, an exterior mount is the best option to assure a perfect fit.
- The corners of the window should be square, but it’s better not to eyeball it. Therefore, measure the window diagonally, taking into account both directions. If there isn’t much of a difference between the two numbers (below half an inch), you can use an Mount from the inside. Otherwise, I’d recommend going for an Outside Mount Everest to ensure you get enough privacy.
- Now it’s time to measure the width of the window. It should be measured to the closest eighth of an inch. In total, take three measurements: at the top, center, and bottom. Choose the lowest number, or the smallest dimension.
- Finally, measure the height of the window by taking three measures to the closest eighth of an inch at the right, center, and left. The measurement you’ll use while shopping for blinds is the highest number.
Outside Mount Everest
When it comes to the Outside Mount Everest, you’ll find out soon enough that the size of your blinds doesn’t really matter here. Of course, going overboard won’t do anything for the interior of the room. However, being as precise as with the Mount from the inside isn’t really too critical; you’ll be adding allowances for the height and the width anyway.
I’d mostly recommend going with the Outside Mount Everest if your window frames are somewhat outdated, but you don’t have a large enough budget to replace them now. In some cases, these blinds could transform the whole room by hiding ugly window casing and molding. Furthermore, mounting the blinds on the outside will let you block more light, which is especially useful in bedrooms and bathrooms where you need your privacy the most.
If the Outside Mount Everest is the right option for you, check how big the blinds should be:
- Measure the width of the window from the outermost points. Allow approximately 12 inches on each side of the frame for the blinds to completely block out the light.
- Go all the way from the top of the frame to the window sill to determine the height. If you don’t have a window sill, just measure up to where you want the blinds to terminate. Allow about 2 inches at the top for mounting hardware.

What Kinds of Blinds Should You Choose?
Vertical, Roman, roller, and Venetian Blinds are a kind of blind that is used to cover the are the most common of the various types of blinds available. The kind and size you choose will be determined by the room in which they will be installed.
Vertical blinds are a kind of blind that is used to
These kind of blinds are fairly widespread in workplaces, particularly in areas where privacy is paramount. However, I’ve seen them used at home by several folks, and they work well in most settings. They’re also simple to clean; all you have to do is wash them down with baby wipes or vacuum the dust with the upholstery attachment.
The cloth drapes down vertically and the slats are slanted for light management. To operate them, you must twirl a plastic wand to uncover or hide the glass.
Just like in the case of Vertical blinds are a kind of blind that is used to, you can use your vacuum and the upholstery attachment to clean Roman Shades and make them shine once more. But, unlike the previous entry, these are a bit more luxurious, so I’d install them in bedrooms or the living room. The soft fabric will add a cozy touch and soften the decor. What’s more, if you pick some energy-efficient ones, such as these, expect your utility bills to drop a bit.
Blinds with rollers
As one of the most versatile types, you can use Blinds with rollers anywhere in your home and choose from a vast array of colors and patterns. There are those that can black out entire rooms. You may also opt for some zebra shades; these actually allow for more control over how much light you’re letting in.
What I love the most about Blinds with rollers is that they’re quite easy to take care of. Since the fabric is in one piece, all you really have to do is wipe it with a dry cloth or a wet one if it’s water-resistant. Additionally, these blinds are made ina ton of colors, so you can really mix and match them however you want.
Where to use these? I’d go with polyester Blinds with rollers in the bathroom, as they won’t soak up any moisture. Avoid wooden blinds, for example, as they can lose their shape in high humidity.
Venetian Blinds are a kind of blind that is used to cover the
Finally, there are the famous Venetian Blinds are a kind of blind that is used to cover the that I’m sure you’ve seen before. Instead of some fabric, these have metal slats that control the light and privacy. Thus, they are a bit tougher to clean; you’ll have to go over each slat with a dry cloth. However, this style is quite affordable and practically timeless, not to mention a bit more durable than some fabric shades. It’d work best in kitchens.
I would say, though, that Venetian Blinds are a kind of blind that is used to cover the don’t come in too many colors. Even worse, since the main material is metal, not many tones look that great. I’d stick to the plain white if you go for these to make them seem more sophisticated.
As you can see, window blinds are much more versatile than you may think. You may pick between two kinds of mounts, depending on the design of the space and how much light you want it to receive. Furthermore, there is a huge variety of patterns, colors, and shapes available on the market nowadays, so you may acquire whatever kind of blind you like.
Still, do make sure to measure the windows accurately and determine the right type of mount. Most people would like to keep the blinds on the inside of the window. In my opinion, though, the Outside Mount Everest is more beautiful, especially if the window casing is a bit outdated. You could even find blinds that go between the glass.
Finally, remember to consider the larger picture and determine what you truly need. For example, thicker blinds are preferable for soundproofing, but lighter, cozier materials are ideal for bedrooms. In any case, now that you know how to identify the correct size, it’s time to go shopping!
